Emotional Eating

The first step in putting a stop to emotional eating is identifying your personal triggers. What situations, places, or feelings make you reach for the comfort of food? Most emotional eating is linked to unpleasant feelings, but it can also be triggered by positive emotions, such as rewarding yourself for achieving a goal or celebrating a holiday or happy event.

Every time you overeat or feel compelled to reach for comfort food, take a moment to PRAY and then figure out what triggered the urge. If you backtrack, you’ll usually find an upsetting event that kicked of the emotional eating cycle. Write it all down in your food and mood diary: what you ate (or wanted to eat), what happened to upset you, how you felt before you ate, what you felt as you were eating, and how you felt afterward.

Over time, you’ll see a pattern emerge. Maybe you always end up gorging yourself after spending time with a critical friend. Or perhaps you stress eat whenever you’re on a deadline or when you attend family functions. Once you identify your emotional eating triggers, the next step is identifying healthier ways to feed your feelings.

In order to stop emotional eating, you have to find other ways to fulfill yourself emotionally. It’s not enough to understand the cycle of emotional eating or even to understand your triggers, although that’s a huge first step. You need alternatives to food that you can turn to for emotional fulfillment.

ALTERNATIVES TO EMOTIONAL EATING

If you’re depressed or lonely, call someone who always makes you feel better, play with your dog or cat, or look at a favorite photo or cherished memento.

If you’re anxious, expend your nervous energy by listening to a hymn, squeezing a stress ball, or taking a brisk walk.

If you’re exhausted, treat yourself with a hot cup of herbal tea, take a bath, light a candle, or wrap yourself in a warm blanket.

If you’re bored, read a good book, watch a sermon, explore the outdoors, or turn to an activity you enjoy (woodworking, playing the guitar, croqueting, knitting, organizing, scrapbooking, etc.).

Pause when cravings hit and check in with yourself.

Most emotional eaters feel powerless over their food cravings. When the urge to eat hits, it’s all you can think about. You feel an almost unbearable tension that demands to be fed, right now! Because you’ve tried to resist in the past and failed, you believe that your willpower just isn’t up to snuff. But the truth is that you have more power over your cravings than you think.  Remember: Phil 4:13 – I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.

  • Take 5 minutes before you give in to a craving.

Emotional eating tends to be automatic and virtually mindless. Before you even realize what you’re doing, you’ve reached for a tub of ice cream and polished off half of it. But if you can take a moment to pause and reflect when you’re hit with a craving, you give yourself the opportunity to make a different decision.

Can you put off eating for five minutes? Or just start with one minute. Don’t tell yourself you can’t give in to the craving; remember, the forbidden is extremely tempting. Just tell yourself to wait. PRAY!!!  Most important! God promises he will not let us be tempted beyond what we are able. 1 Cor 10:13 – There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it.

While you’re waiting, check in with yourself. How are you feeling? What’s going on emotionally? Even if you end up eating, you’ll have a better understanding of why you did it. This can help you set yourself up for a different response next time.

Learn to accept your feelings—even the bad ones

While it may seem that the core problem is that you’re powerless over food, emotional eating actually stems from feeling powerless over your emotions. You don’t feel capable of dealing with your feelings head on, so you avoid them with food.

Allowing yourself to feel uncomfortable emotions can be scary. You may fear that, like Pandora’s box, once you open the door you won’t be able to shut it. But the truth is that when we don’t obsess over or suppress our emotions, even the most painful and difficult feelings subside relatively quickly and lose their power to control our attention.

To do this you need to become mindful and learn how to stay connected to your moment-to-moment emotional experience. This can enable you to rein in stress and repair emotional problems that often trigger emotional eating.

Support yourself with healthy lifestyle habits

When you’re physically strong, relaxed, and well rested, you’re better able to handle the curveballs that life inevitably throws your way. But when you’re already exhausted and overwhelmed, any little hiccup has the potential to send you off the rails and straight toward the refrigerator. Exercise, sleep, and other healthy lifestyle habits will help you get through difficult times without emotional eating.

  • Make daily exercise a priority. Physical activity does wonders for your mood and energy levels, and it’s also a powerful stress reducer. And getting into the exercise habit is easier than you may think.
  • Aim for 7-8 hours of sleep every night. We are counseled to be in bed by 9 pm. When you don’t get the sleep you need, your body craves sugary foods that will give you a quick energy boost. Getting plenty of rest will help with appetite control and reduce food cravings.
  • Make time for relaxation. Give yourself permission to take at least 30 minutes every day to relax, decompress, and unwind. This is your time to take a break from your responsibilities and recharge your batteries. Getting in the bathtub is a good way to do this too!

The bath is a soother of the nerves. Bathing helps the bowels, the stomach, and the liver, giving health and energy to each, and it promotes digestion.  {CG 108.3}

  • Connect with others. Don’t underestimate the importance of close relationships and social activities. Spending time with positive people who enhance your life will help protect you from the negative effects of stress.

HOW DO YOU GET BACK ON TRACK?

When negative emotions threaten to trigger emotional eating, you can take steps to control cravings. To help stop emotional eating, try these tips:

  • Keep a food diary. Write down what you eat, how much you eat, when you eat, how you're feeling when you eat and how hungry you are. Over time, you might see patterns that reveal the connection between mood and food.
  • Tame your stress. If stress contributes to your emotional eating, try a stress management technique, such as deep breathing.
    “The one who sits and stands erect is more likely than others to breathe properly. But the teacher should impress upon his pupils the importance of deep breathing. Show how the healthy action of the respiratory organs, assisting the circulation of the blood, invigorates the whole system, excites the appetite, promotes digestion, and induces sound, sweet sleep, thus not only refreshing the body, but soothing and tranquilizing the mind. And while the importance of deep breathing is shown, the practice should be insisted upon. Let exercises be given which will promote this, and see that the habit becomes established. . . .”  {CG 364.4}
  • Have a hunger reality check. Is your hunger physical or emotional? If you ate just a few hours ago you're not hungry. Give the craving time to pass. Drink cold water or juice.
  • Get support. You're more likely to give in to emotional eating if you lack a good support network. Lean on family and friends or consider joining a support group.
  • Fight boredom. Instead of snacking when you're not hungry, distract yourself and substitute a healthier behavior. Take a walk, watch a sermon, play with your cat, listen to music, read, surf the internet or call a friend.
  • Take away temptation. Don't keep hard-to-resist comfort foods in your home. And if you feel angry or blue, postpone your trip to the grocery store until you have your emotions in check.
  • Don't deprive yourself. When trying to lose weight, you might limit calories too much, eat the same foods repeatedly and banish treats. This may just serve to increase your food cravings, especially in response to emotions. Eat satisfying amounts of healthier foods, enjoy an occasional treat (like on Sabbath) and get plenty of variety to help curb cravings.
  • Snacking is NOT healthy. If you feel the urge to eat between meals, drink some cold water or juice as I said above.
  • Learn from setbacks. If you have an episode of emotional eating, forgive yourself and start fresh the next day. Try to learn from the experience and make a plan for how you can prevent it in the future. Focus on the positive changes you're making in your eating habits and give yourself credit for making changes that'll lead to better health.

Elderberry Syrup

Ingredients:
3 cups filtered water
1.5 cups raw honey preferably local
1.5 cups dried elderberries (or 2-3 cups fresh) preferably organic

1. Place dried elderberries (or fresh, ripe elderberries if you have them locally) and filtered water in a medium saucepan.

2. Bring to a boil, reduce heat, and simmer on medium-low for 30 minutes. The liquid will reduce by about one-third.

3. Remove pan from heat and mash the elderberries to release any remaining juice.

4. Strain the mixture into a glass bowl using a cheesecloth.

5. When the liquid has come to body temperature or lower (about 30 minutes), gently stir in the raw honey and mix thoroughly. Check the syrup with a candy thermometer to be sure it is lower than 118 F/ 48 C. Any higher will destroy the antibiotic properties of the raw honey.

6. Store and label in small, glass, amber bottles.

And another option:

Eggs!

The word egg is a reproductive body of an animal whose embryo is covered with a shell of membrane.

So for those of us who have not realized it, eggs pertain to female ovum. The egg contains the biogenetic makeup of its parent organism.

Most humans eat eggs that are not from their own species. The eggs eaten by humans usually come from fowl or birds that have a very different biogenetic and molecular structural makeup.

Eating eggs can promote a host of diseases and pathologies.
Eggs can play a pivotal role in some female reproductive diseases including fibroid tumors, uterine cysts, breast cancer and tumors, and menstrual irregularities. Also, since these chicken eggs are sterilized or infertile, they are in fact impairing their own sexual fertility and potency.

Eating eggs can certainly change or alter your bio-chemical, genetic, and molecular makeup and make you susceptible to a host of diseases and pathologies. Eggs are more dangerous than smoking cigarettes found in a recent London study.

Researchers found that eating egg yolks regularly increased plaque buildup approximately two-thirds as much as smoking would. Using data from more than 1200 people in London, it appeared those who ate three or more egg yolks a week had significantly more plaque in their arteries than those who ate no eggs at all. One large egg has 100 calories, 230 milligrams of cholesterol in the yolk.

The 280 million chickens used each year for their eggs, called "laying hens" by the industry, endure a nightmare that lasts for two years.

At just a few days old, a large portion of each hen's beak is cut off with a burning-hot blade, and no painkillers are used. Many birds, unable to eat because of the pain, die from dehydration and weakened immune systems.  After enduring these mutilations, hens are shoved into tiny wire "battery" cages, which measure roughly 18 by 20 inches and hold five to 11 hens, each of whom has a wingspan of 32 inches. Even in the best-case scenario, each hen will spend the rest of her life crowded in a space about the size of a file drawer with four other hens, unable to lift even a single wing.

The birds are crammed so closely together that these normally clean animals are forced to urinate and defecate on one another. The stench of ammonia and feces hangs heavy in the air, and disease runs rampant in the filthy, cramped sheds. Many birds die, and survivors are often forced to live with their dead and dying cagemates, who are sometimes left to rot.

The light in the sheds is constantly manipulated in order to maximize egg production. Periodically, for two weeks at a time, the hens are only fed reduced-calorie feed. This process induces an extra laying cycle.

Male chicks are worthless to the egg industry, so every year millions of them are tossed into trash bags to suffocate or are thrown into high-speed grinders called "macerators" while they are still alive.

Just imagine the scenario for an instant in your mind.....Every time I see an omelet or bake goods or a hard boil egg, I think of the horrible production from the agony of the chicken to the commercializing of egg marketing. It is profoundly sad and draws tears to my eyes.

BEFORE EATING AN EGG CONSIDER THE FOLLOWING:

1.) An egg is for producing a new chick.

2.) An egg is a chicken's period.

3.) An egg is highly acidic and toxic to the blood and tissues.

4.) An egg when cracked creates over 38 million pathological microorganisms that are harmful to the body.

5.) Eating an egg will pollute the blood and tissues with excess bacteria and yeast.

6.) The ingestion of an egg will immediately activate the white blood cells.

7.) An egg is one of my top ten toxic acidic foods to never eat.

So when you eat an egg think about what you are really eating.

Earwax Removal

Earwax Removal Remedy #1:
This procedure is natural, effective, and cheap. Also you can use any kind of olive or almond oil you have at home. Before starting all these procedures, put the dropper (full of olive oil) in room temperatures to avoid the harms of hot/cold oil.

First put your head on one side and pull your ear up and out to straighten your ear canal.

Use a dropper to apply couple of drops of olive oil in your ear.

Then hold your head in the same position for 4-5 minutes and massage the muscles around your ear to loosen the muscles and the wax in your ear.

After 5 minutes you can lift your head and remove anything that comes out of your ear with a tissue. You can do the same procedure for the other side too.

You should follow these procedures 4 times a day, until all the wax completely disappears. If the problem persists for more than a week, you may need to go to a medical center to remove the wax.

Earwax Removal Remedy #2:
Just place one drop of food grade peroxide in the ear to remove ear wax. Just drop it in the ear and turn head sideways.

Earth Balance

Earth Balance is not a healthy margarine….in fact NO margarine is healthy. You can make your own way cheaper and tastes much better as well.

Ingredients: Natural oil blend (palm fruit, and canola, soybean, flax and olive oils), filtered water, contains less than 2% of pure salt, natural flavor (plant derived from corn, no MSG, no alcohol, no gluten), pea protein, sunflower lecithin, lactic acid (non-dairy), and naturally extracted annatto for color.
  • Canola Oil which is POISON to the body. The soybean and canola oils are almost certainly genetically modified.
  • Natural Flavor is another name for MSG.
  • Corn is more than likely GMO, even tho it says no MSG, they are talking about not putting it in the margarine.
  • Pea Protein is not good, it is just another form of MSG. All protein powders are highly processed and not a healthy choice.

Butter Recipe
1 ¼ c. coconut oil, melted
¾ c. olive oil
2 T. liquid soy lecithin, organic or non-GMO OR 4 T. lecithin granules
1 T. + 1 t. salt
1 c. boiling hot water

Place coconut oil and olive oil in blender with lecithin…blend for about 60-75 seconds to mix it well.

Put the boiling water in a measuring cup and then add the salt. Mix with a spoon. Add it SLOWLY to the mixture in the blender while blending.

Blend for at least 60 seconds or more until thick and then pour into a container that holds at least 4 cups. Place in the refrigerator and it will harden.

You can use this in any recipe calling for butter or margarine. You can freeze this too!

  • LOOKS IDENTICAL TO REAL BUTTER.
  • IT MELTS LIKE BUTTER.
  • TASTES LIKE BUTTER.
  • SPREADS LIKE BUTTER.
  • MELT ON POPCORN.
  • SPREADS ON CORN-ON-THE-COB.

This can be used in all recipes that ask for butter or margarine.

The best thing is it does not clog your arteries, cause diabetes, heart disease, stroke, or a heart attack!!!

*** It is still fat, although a plant fat, so be sparing.

***There is zero cholesterol in this.

Get Rid of Dust Mites

Dust mites are known to create skin allergies and asthma and live in your pillow and in your bed by the millions.

As gross as it sounds, they eat our dead skin and are a major cause of asthma and allergies; especially in vulnerable individuals, such as children and the elderly. According to the American College of Asthma, Allergy & Immunology, approximately 10 percent of Americans exhibit allergic sensitivity to dust mites.

As we close up our houses during the cold months, the concentrations of dust mites and their feces increases inside.

Tips: Air out your mattress once a month and on sunny days let the rays shine on it.
Open your windows daily and let the fresh air in. Spray the room with a natural air freshener.

DISINFECTING SOLUTION:
1. Mix equal parts of white vinegar and warm water.
2. Add 2 T. Hydrogen Peroxide
3. Soak a wash cloth in the solution.
4. Wring out the washcloth and clean the top, bottom, and sides of the mattress.
5. Let dry 1 hour.
6. Wrap your mattress with a cotton cover.
7. Wash the cover once month in hot water and add ½ cup of white vinegar in the bleach dispenser.

Do this weekly to control and get rid of the dust mites’ population. Your family will thank you.

Dr. Bronner's Castile Soap

I really like this soap and have been using it for many years so I thought I would share some of the good things about it with you.

The uses for Dr. Bronner's Castile Soap are seemingly endless: This organic, fair trade soap is a very popular, three generations brand that simply exploded in the 1960’s with massive product sales. The soap is completely natural and full of beneficial moisturizing oils, as well as therapeutic essential oils. The soap with its eight different scents has many versatile uses.

Here are several uses for Dr. Bronner's Castile Soap that are not only amazing but will save you plenty of money!

1. BODY WASH
One of the great uses for Dr. Bronner's Castile Soap is as a body wash. You just need a tiny amount squirted on a loofa for a rich, soapy lather due to the high amounts of coconut oil. I would suggest either using the lavender, rose or almond versions for a wonderful mild scent. The other citrus-based scents are a little harsher and probably would require a lot more diluting, especially for sensitive areas.

7 HANDY DANDY USES FOR DR. BRONNER'S SOAP:
http://skincare.allwomenstalk.com/handy-dandy-uses-for-dr-bronners-soap

2. SHAMPOO
Because the ingredients in Castile soap are all-natural, organic and pure, using it in place of your regular shampoo is a great option! It contains jojoba oil, coconut oil, and Vitamin E oil which leave the hair well-conditioned. One of the scents is invigorating Tea Tree which would relieve your itchy and flaky scalp and would keep away potential head lice! If you work with kids or are around them often, head lice is always a possibility. Fortunately tea tree oil keeps them at bay without any harsh chemicals! If you prefer a more floral scent, stick to rose, almond or lavender. Another option is to buy their shampoo formula instead of the soap, although the soap alone is still very popular. You will also need to follow up with a good conditioner.

3. HAIR & BODY WASH FOR BABY
The mild version of the soap is unscented and specifically formulated for baby's gentle skin needs. I'm always looking for a good soap for my son that cleans well, conditions and is chemical-free. I don't think any of us want to load up our baby's skin and hair with toxins, chemicals and carcinogens. Plus, many of the name-brands out there actually flare up skin conditions such as eczema. Dr. Bronner's baby mild soap will calm and protect baby's soft skin!

7 REASONS TO USE HANDMADE SOAP:

4. LAUNDRY SOAP
Most laundry detergents are not only harsh on your skin and can cause things like dermatitis, but they are also bad for the environment. Using about 1/3 cup of the Castile soap of your choice plus borax or baking soda, will clean and preserve your clothing in a natural way. Try the Eucalyptus scent which is good for bedding and getting rid of dust mites which are pesky and gross.

5. ALL-PURPOSE CLEANER
Tea Tree and eucalyptus oils have more antimicrobial properties and would be ideal for the use of an all-purpose household cleaner. You can use these specific soaps or opt for the citrus scents for a more invigorating, fresh aroma. Use 1/4 cup soap and one quart water within a spray bottle for mild cleaning and use a 1:1 ratio of soap to water for tougher, grease-related spills and stains. Because the soap can react with minerals on hard water surfaces and leave streaks, use vinegar to cleanse the area after. Vinegar is a disinfectant, however DON'T COMBINE THE SOAP AND VINEGAR IN ONE BOTTLE. The vinegar is an acid and the soap is a base so the vinegar will separate the oils in the soap leaving all components useless.

20 INCREDIBLY USEFUL TIPS FOR EVERYDAY LIVING:

6. VEGETABLE RINSE
For cleaning vegetables of pesticides and dirt particles, use the unscented baby mild soap. You only need a dash of the soap mixed in a tub or large bowl of warm water for it to be effective. Just remember to rinse the soap off completely after. Although the soap is harmless, no one likes the taste of soap!

7. CLEARING CONGESTION
When you're not feeling well, put one tablespoon of Dr. Bronner's into a bowl of steaming hot water. Drape a towel over your head, and breathe in the steam until your congestion clears. This is particularly good with the peppermint-scented soap as peppermint oil clears the sinuses.

As you can see, there are some amazing uses for this wonderful castile soap! Other uses include mouthwash, deodorant and toothpaste, although they don't seem to be that effective in these areas - plus, it just tastes like soap!

Have any of you used Dr. Bronner's before
What are some of your favorite uses and scents?
