Infant Formula Homemade And How Often To Feed

Sister White supported and endorsed Dr. Merritt Kellogg. He has a book titled, 'Hygienic Family Physician' which teaches us many things; but today I am sharing what he says regarding feeding an infant and how to make your own formula.

He gives a formula on page 13.  He even says a baby under 2 months should not be fed more frequently than every 3 hours, an only once in the night.

At 2-6 months old, a baby should be fed every 3.5-4 hours and if of fair health, no night feeding.

He then goes on to say:

The food of the infant should be its mother's milk, but if this is not to be had, cow's milk should be substituted for it. (that was in their day when cows were still okay to use, but of course not our day)

He then goes on to say, if the right kind of milk cannot be obtained, gruel may be made that will be as good as cow's milk, if not better.

Take powdered barley (it may be grounded in a coffee grinder) 1 tsp. to a gill (1/2 cup approx.) of water, and boil it x 15-20 minutes. Strain through a fine sieve or strainer, and add a very little sugar (raw).

Give this to the child blood warm in a nursing bottle, keeping the bottle an mouthpiece in water, when not in use, to keep them sweet and clean.

For infants under 6 months old, this diet will be found better than a diet of cow's milk.
